The 150th Birth Anniversary of the Father of Our Nation Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated with elan in Chinmaya Vidyalaya Vaduthala. With many enlightening programmes lined up for the day, it was a great opportunity for all to introspect on the ideas and ideals zealously practised by the Mahatma. The programme started with the Sarva Dharma prayer by the school choir. The Principal Ms  Prathiba V in her address highlighted the need for embracing the ideals of truth, compassion and the principle of nonviolence that alone can provide clarity to our perspectives on character formation and education. The Guest of Honour for the day Justice Shamsudeen, Chairman of the Gandhi Peace Foundation, talked at length about Gandhiji’s contributions towards carving out a spiritually awakened society by imprinting in its psyche a respect for the archetypal values that give meaning to human existence.  He also emphasized on the need for value based education as the  future destiny of India lies in its classrooms. The Head Girl Gayatri Deshpande proposed the Vote of Thanks. This was followed by a skit that brought history alive through the pages of Chamaparan incident and Dandi march.
The plogathon for FIT INDIA PLOGGING was flagged off by the Principal and many students participated in it. Its aim was to create awareness about Swasthya and Swatchatha with the participants picking up litter and plastic from the path of their 2 km run. There was a demonstration on recycling waste where in Std 9 students recreated dolls, flower pots and flower baskets from discarded objects. The whole school joined in to take a pledge to rededicate themselves to create a clean, unpolluted world. Another uplifting skit centered on the incidents from Gandhiji’s childhood threw light on the power of truth and fearlessness to transform a person thoroughly and conclusively. The all-time favourite Bhajans of Gandhiji resonated in the auditorium and created a surge of longing to belong to an era of pristine glory that can be conceived of by tuning oneself to Gandhian values.

Varsha G of Std X spoke about Kasthurba Gandhi- a role model to be emulated by all. Another thematic presentation of self-reliance literary stole the show. This was followed by a tableau on the five memorable visits of Gandhiji to Kerala. Presented in a very innovative style, with the stage strategies incorporating a single movable frame depicting Gandhiji’s spinning wheel and glasses and shifting the scene to portray the various momentous and historic incidents were highly effective.  This etched the visual impact of a monumental journey into our vibrant history. Another insightful event showcased by the students was based on Gandhiji’s life in South Africa with focus on the painful incident he had while travelling by train. The students successfully portrayed how a personal pain can be a catalyst for positive societal changes.
The Primary section celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi on 1st October with a total involvement in various programmes aimed at spreading awareness about the Mahatma’s life. The programme comprised the Principal’s address, patriotic songs, storytelling, recitation of a poem on Gandhiji, a presentation on Dandi March, a dance on National Integration and a special appearance of Bappuji with his uplifting message.
On the whole this year’s Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations stood out with respect to its conception and execution with an eye on detail.
